HISTORY

Several local artists who had business locations or art studios on Main Street founded the Park City Artist Association in 1981. The first meeting was held at Diane Balaban's "Studio Nine". In attendance at that meeting were Diane Balaban, Holly Rom, Cathy Cartier, Lynda Myers, Judy Summers, and Marko Johnson.

All of these artists had been rejected from being included in the last Park City Art Festival. Since all of these artists lived, worked, had galleries or shops on Main Street and supported the Arts in Park City all year long felt that they should not be excluded from the best opportunity of the year to show and sell their works.

Forming an Artist Alliance seemed like a way to get the message across to the organizers of the Festival. Showing group support for the Kimball Art Center was one of the ideas discussed at the first meeting. The exact date of the first meeting has not been established but notes from meeting number 3 have been found.

On September 30, 1981 several members met. It was noted that the organization currently had 41 members. Topics of discussion included;
resume deadline for Artist Binder to be kept at the Kimball Art Center for public information about the members of the Park City Artist Association.
Discussion of first Christmas show to be held on December 13, at the Holiday Inn (now the Yarrow) and the benefits of group health insurance.

Note: Meetings were held on a regular monthly schedule and most of the concerned members were included in the 1982 Park City Art Festival and had their own area at the bottom of Main Street adjacent to the Kimball Art Center.
The Park City Artist Association also had a main gallery group show in conjunction with the art festival at the Kimball Art Center.
In September 1982, the opportunity to open a consignment gallery in the Old Town Library building located at 520 Main St. became available and about 20 Artist Association members formed an Artists Co-op Gallery named, the "Art Network". The Art Network was open for about a year until the lease on the building terminated. Several of the successful artists formed a core group and opened a new gallery at 461 Main St. named, the "Park City Artworks" gallery. The Artworks is still in operation.
