Artist: A native of Mobile, Alabama, Tamara moved to Utah in the early 90’s and settled in Heber six years ago with her two children. She began painting in watercolor at a community art class when she lived in Florida and has since studied art at the University of Utah as well as with many Utah artists such as Steve Songer, Doug Braithwaite, George Handrahan and Ron Chesley. She now paints mostly in oils, preferring the texture and luminosity of the medium over watercolor. Her work has been juried into the Utah Arts Council statewide painting exhibition and was selected for the yearlong travelling exhibition.
Much of her inspiration comes from the rural countryside in the Heber valley, but the red rock country in southern Utah is a favorite subject as well. “I love to paint outdoors; it brings me back to the times of childhood when I could explore the woods, swim in the creek or walk the gulf coast beaches. And it usually brings a lovely surprise like when a young buck mule deer in velvet ambled up next to me or an American Dipper sang at my feet on the edge of the river as I painted. Painting has forced me to take the time to notice my surroundings and appreciate the beauty that surrounds me here in Utah. ”
